Peer Mediation
In order to maintain an environment where teaching and learning can flourish; students need to find non-violent solutions to their differences. An approach to creating peaceable schools is being adopted with remarkable success throughout the country. This approach is called "peer mediation."
Peer mediation places the power and responsibility for resolving conflicts into the students' hands. Perhaps most important, peer mediation emphasizes the importance of "win-win" solutions - solutions based on accommodating the interested of both parties - rather than the more competitive "win-lose" approach that tends to invite retaliation.
When students, as peer mediators, are empowered to help themselves and each other to resolve conflicts peacefully, they will have developed skills that will help them throughout their lives.
At the present time grade 6 students are trained on the peer mediation program. The peer mediation program runs from Oct. - June. For more information call 823-5244 and ask for the Family Resource Worker.
