Message to Parents

As parents, we want our children to receive the best education they can get. School Council provides us with the opportunity to enter into a more meaningful partnership with our school. School Councils were legislated by the government of Alberta in 1995 in Section 17 of the School Act.
At Greentree School Council, we have ordinary people, like you and me, who do an extra-ordinary job of serving our school community. Every volunteer makes a difference - the ones who do the planning and organizing, and the ones who make those plans become reality. So whether you are a "mover & shaker" or a " do-er & baker", we have a place for you. Please join us soon!

Annual Report

Our year started off with our Annual General Meeting.  Most positions were filled that evening which was good to see.  A great group of volunteers offered to help in a variety of ways.

Council again provided classroom disbursements in the amount of $5,010.  This was based on $15 per full time student and $7.50 per part time kindergarten student.  The teachers use these funds in order to help supplement costs for those little extras as well as for field trips.  Other activities paid for by Council this year were:

Staff wish list      $1,216.57

Bussing for swimming $3,527.1

In-line skating   $   821.74

Income came from our chocolate sales.  This total was $8,659.16.  We withdrew a portion of the CIBC GIC to supplement our other costs during the year.  The balance of that GIC is $13,126.97.

During the course of the year highlights included:

(1) 2 successful dances (in Oct & April).  Attendance was great for both.  Paul Barry continues to offer his DJ services at no cost.  I’d like to make note of this and extend Council’s sincere thanks to Paul.

(2)  many members sat on a variety of committees throughout the year including dances, fund raising, Teacher / Staff Appreciation Week and others.

(3)  Shari Skytt attend the school divisions annual “Think Tank”.

(4) Pat Giffin and Dorrie Hein attended the “Council of Councils” meeting.  Good information was presented regarding school taxes, how schools are funded and an update on the International Student program.

(5) February brought us to our annual Teacher / Staff Appreciation Week.  The successful week held many surprises for the staff & bus drivers and was wrapped up by an awesome lunch at the end of the week.  We truly appreciate everything that all staff and bus drivers give to Greentree.

(6)The “Drumheller Solution” was awarded $24.7 million dollars from AB Education.  Facility plans are still in the preliminary stages, but hopefully plans will get moving more quickly next year.

(7) Council renewed Ron Nickol’s contract for school photos for another year.

(8)The first year of the full-time kindergarten program had full enrollment and looks like it is a great success.  The program looks to continue for the 2006-07 school year.

(9)Our hot lunch program was very successful, having many hot dog days, one Sub-Way day and a couple DQ days.

(10)Council again participated in the C.U.R.E. fundraiser for breast cancer research.  We raised $300 this year.

(11)Another great yearend BBQ was held in conjunction with Universal Compression.  Many volunteers ensured that everyone was well fed with burgers, hot dogs, juice, cookies and watermelon.  Who could ask for a better way to end the year!

Friends of Greentree School Society invested the $45,000 casino proceeds until such time as an exact purpose is determined.  This depends on facility plans.

We had a great year, did a lot of hard work, but also had a lot of fun.  I want to thank each and every one of you for your dedication and hard work.  Without you Council and Greentree staff would not be able to do the many wonderful things we did for our students this past year.

Remember . . . . . .

100 years from now . . . .

It will not matter what your bank account was,

The type of house you lived in,

              Or the car you drove,

But the world may be different because you were important in the life of a CHILD..

Respectfully submitted.,

Pat Giffin

Annual General Meeting/Elections

Our first meeting of the school year, in September, is our Annual General Meeting. At this meeting, nominations and election of executive members takes place. As well, other coordinators and the room representatives are appointed. Every parent of Greentree School is eligible to be elected or appointed. Officers hold their positions for a one-year term.

Activities

School Council facilitates many different activities for the school community. Some are yearly events; others are one-time sponsored or co-sponsored events. As well, there are many opportunities to volunteer and support the school community.

Outdoor Classroom
School council is proud of the contribution that many volunteers made in order to provide the amazing Learning Garden that was completed in the Fall of 2009.  Many thanks to Anne Morgan, Marina Flater, and Solberg Landscaping for planning and executing this fantastic gardent.

Dances
Family dances are held a couple of times a year, usually in the fall and the spring. These are really fun times that parents, students and staff enjoy together. The music is great, there are prizes to be won, and there is a concession for refreshments. A parent or guardian must accompany students, and a small family rate applies. We had our Halloween Howler Dance and it was a HUGE success!

Breakfast Program
A good breakfast is essential for students to start the day ready to learn. We are extremely pleased with all our corporate and private donators as well as our many volunteers. Without them, or our hard working Breakfast Program Coordinator, Chris Marion, the Breakfast Program would not exisit!!

Hot Lunch Program
School Council organizes the hot lunch throughout the year for all students who wish to participate. These lunches are an occasional treat for students as well as being an important fund-raiser for the school council.  This year we had hot dog days, Dairy Queen days and Boston Pizza days. Volunteers are necessary in order to provide our hot lunch program.

Teacher Appreciation Week
Teacher Appreciation Week is a national event the School Council celebrates each year. In February 2010 we showed our appreciation in a variety of ways. We offered breakfast, supervision, gifts, lunch, prizes, cake and cards. Many parents and local businesses make this week a success with their generous contributions of food, prizes, donations and volunteer time.

Fundraising
Fundraising is a necessary part of School Council. These funds enable us to provide support and offer opportunities to the school community. These funds go to such things as: the outdoor classroom, additional ActivBoards for classrooms, bussing for swimming lessons, class trips, special speakers, cultural events, and much more.

Some of the ways funds are raised are as follows: May 2010 "Fundraising Magic" show, fall Mom's Pantry campaign, hot lunches, and Casino.

Year End Barbeque
This is a great way to end the year, with dozens and dozens of hamburgers and hotdogs, mustard-colored shirts, ketchup smiles, and sun-stained faces all around.

School Photographer
School Council chooses the photographer. We also co-ordinate the volunteers to make sure all students are ready for that memorable "cheese"!

Becoming Involved

There are many ways to become involved in School Council. There are leadership positions and support roles that require different skills and different time demands. From being a part of the executive, to offering to bake for events, there is room for everyone's abilities, personalities and time restrictions.

Volunteers are needed for picture day, nit patrol, breakfast program, hot lunch program, and many other areas such as library, Book Fairs, etc. You may have special interests and abilities that could enhance our school community; such as computer skills, artistry, or craftsmanship - the possibilities are endless!

There is a volunteer survey that is sent out at the beginning of the school year. As well, all parents are invited to attend the council meetings, and everyone's input is valued. If you are unable to attend the meetings, you may want to have the minutes emailed to you. If so, let us know.

How to join us
Anytime throughout the year, parents are welcome to attend a council meeting. This is a good way to find out what issues we are discussing and what activities we are involved in. The meetings are also a good place to meet other parents in the school and build friendships.

You can indicate your desire to become involved on the volunteer survey that is handed out at the beginning of the school year or contacting the school. There are positions to which parents are elected and appointed. You may indicate an interest in these positions anytime, especially at the end of the school year for the upcoming year.

Your presence at the Annual General Meeting in September is most valuable in setting the course for the school year in terms of volunteer coordinators.
